Qualifications

I earned my A.B. from Tulane University magna cum laude in classical languages and philosophy. I received Tulane`s oldest prize, the Judah Touro Medal, for excellence in the ancient languages and philosophy. The University of Chicago awarded me a full tuition fellowship to its Master`s program with a concentration in classical languages and philosophy. Having completed the program I am now a doctoral candidate, though taking some time off to reflect, in a dual PhD program (classics and philosophy) at Cornell University.

Information about Will

I`ve done coursework in Latin, Greek, German, Spanish, philosophy, chemistry, physics, biology, psychology, and mathematics at Columbia University, New York University, Syracuse University, C.W. Post, Loyola New Orleans, Farmingdale University, Tulane University, The University of Chicago, Cornell University, the Goethe Institut (in Germany),and others. During high school, I hatched and raised birds both in my home and in the science department chair’s office. Undertaking an independent study on emotional and developmental avian intelligence, a project funded by my high school and Bird Talk, (and later awarded by the Long Island Science Education Leadership Association for outstanding achievement in science research), I saw my research subjects, whom I, both a fan of classics and calculus, named Atlas, after the "stout-hearted" Greek divinity (Hes. Theog. 507ff), and Agnesi, after the Italian mathematician Maria Gaetana Agnesi (1718-1799), rival not only over pieces of my lunch, but also my attention. I eventually earned my B.A. from Tulane University graduating magna cum laude in classical languages and philosophy. I received Tulane`s oldest prize, the Judah Touro Medal, for excellence in the ancient languages and philosophy. However, before I embarked on my studies at Tulane (in 2006), Hurricane Katrina whirled my focus away from birds, away from science, and toward philosophy - moral psychology within the history of philosophy. I spent my “hurricane” semester at Columbia University, where a professor related some of Plato and Aristotle’s concepts to modern theorist’s thoughts, such as Plato’s tripartite soul to Freud’s tripartite structure of the mind. I must have kept these thinkers in mind as my interests developed into a general concern for how the emotional life has a place, if it does, within the political realm - a philosophical question proper to moral psychological and social and political philosophy. I was interested in the emotions’ place within political philosophy. In my Honors thesis, I examined the Greek concept aidōs ("sense of shame (or) honor," "bashfulness," "modesty" "regard for others," "respect," "reverence" "that which causes shame (or) respect" "dignity," "majesty") in epic poetry (Homer’s Iliad), fifth-century tragedy (Sophocles’ Antigone), and fourth-century philosophy (Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and Plato’s Charmides). The University of Chicago awarded me a full-tuition fellowship to its Master`s program with a concentration in classical languages and philosophy. I wrote my MA thesis on ad Verecundiam in Cicero`s De Officiis under the direction of Martha Nussbaum, Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago Law School. Having completed the program at Chicago I am now a doctoral candidate in a dual PhD program (classics and philosophy) at Cornell University.
