Information about Alexa

I am a current chemistry major with a math minor at The Catholic University of America. I love the STEM fields and hope to make meaningful contributions to society by working in the health/medical field and doing research to improve the lives of others. After graduating, I want to go to public health school to get my MPH in epidemiology and do research involving diseases and pathogens who have little known about them. I hope to expand people`s knowledge on these diseases, increase the treatment options available for them and potentially find a cure.

Availability: I am available starting in May through August weekdays and satruday mornings.

Willing to travel: 20 miles

Experience: I am a highly motivated student who clearly has a passion for science. I have done tutoring in the past specifically at my high school as a volunteer expereince. I tutored classmates in geometry, algebra, chemistry, biology, physics, and history classes. I was also the peer tutoring coordinator for the national honor society at my high school and would help connect students seeking tutoring help to fellow national honors society members who would be of the best service to them. While I did properly tutor other students, I also never hestitated to help someone in my classes whenever they asked me a question or seemed like they needed a little help and clarification. For me, my favorite part of tutoring is how rewarding it feels. It genuinely makes me so happy to see the look on someones face when something finally clicks and a topic makes perfect sense. Nothing is better than knowing you helped them clear any confusion they were having and see them start to do better in subjects they used to struggle in. For me tutoring is a way to take subjects and passions that I have and help someone who has endless potential to excel in them. Maybe it will even make them love a subject or field as much as I do!

I am a math minor who has always excelled in math. The most important things about math though is practicing and making mistakes. Without making mistakes and asking questions you will never learn. In order to thoroughly excel at math you need to be solid in the foundations or the very basic. I can explain something many different ways until it is finally said in a way that makes sense to the particular student. Practice and repition are key though to remembering and understanding how to work through problems.

Science is exciting to me, but I also know that it can be very hard. That is why I think it is important to take the complicated and make it simple. Take confusing science vocabulary and put it into simple everyday language. Once it`s understood at this simple level, then you can work up to more the complex. Using simple analogies, endless examples and clear explanations, I feel topics become easier and easier to understand. Science is about application and practice, without thinking about it in action or practicing skills and topics learned, it is never going to get easier.
