Derek has over 20 years experience tutoring STEM subjects. This experience includes over 5 years in college and university tutoring centers, over 10 years with tutoring organizations, and over 20 years as a freelance tutor.
Derek also has 5 years experience as a secondary education classroom teacher. He has taught high school courses of Introduction to Calculus, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Algebra 2, Integrated Math 3, and Integrated Math 2.
Derek has tutored a wide range of age groups from elementary school students to adult learners. He focuses on university, college, and high school STEM-related courses.
Prior to Derek`s career in education, he was a successful product manager, market analyst, and engineer for several high-tech STEM-based organizations like IBM, Corning, HP, DoD, US Army, Newport News Shipbuilding, AT&T, and Honeywell. He won corporate awards for marketing, improved operations efficiency, and cost reductions. The products he managed and influenced won industry awards and produced leading market share, increased revenue, and greater profits.
Derek has always had an interest in math and science education. He still has an ambition to be a college professor in mathematics, strategy, marketing, or engineering.
Derek instructs, mentors, teaches, and tutors using the Socratic method used by his undergraduate and graduate professors. He combines that approach with his strong academic background to challenge, motivate, and guide students to success.
Derek`s strong academic background and success includes an MBA from a top-ranked business school and a BSEE from a top-ranked engineering program. During his undergraduate and graduate studies, Derek garnered a number of accolades, including graduate fellowship in mathematics and physics, Dean`s List,
University Distinguished Scholarship (12 granted in incoming class of 4000+ students), and National Achievement Scholarship (National Merit Scholarship Foundation).
