I grew up in LA and Chicago. I earned my PhD in sociology from Iowa State University. After graduating I took a one year sabbatical replacement position at Eastern Oregon University. After that, I took a position teaching at the Kyiv Mohyla University in Kyiv, Ukraine that was funded by the Soros foundation and the British Know-How Fund. After having taught in Kyiv for two years, I took a position at Columbus State University. I held this latter position for 25 years and retired as a full professor in May 2024.
