I received a BS in biology and a BS in chemistry in 1975 from the State University of New York at Albany. I received a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Medicine in 1983. I was an assistant professor of Physiology at UCLA from 1983 until 1987. From 1987 until 2001 I was an associate professor of Physiology and Biophysics at UTMB with tenure. From 2002 until 2009 I was a professor of Neuroscience and Cell Biology at UTMB. During my tenure at UTMB, I taught gastrointestinal physiology to first year medical students and nursing students. I taught renal physiology to 2nd year students. From 2002 until 2009 I taught cardiovascular physiology, cell biology, and renal physiology in small groups as part of an integrated curriculum. From 2009 until 2022 I was the president and head of research and development for a biotechnology company.
