Information about Kevin

I would like apply for a position with your organization, working specifically, for the purpose of this application, as an online tutor. Your job prospectus indicates that you are looking for someone who seeks to make a positive difference in the lives of youth. I have spent the last twenty (20) years of my professional and personal/volunteer life doing just that and I think that my background and experience makes me an ideal candidate to work with you and your children.
The most important qualification I can offer is the diversity of experience I have working with children. My resume attests to my experience in teaching in New Haven and urban areas in general, coaching sports, creating and facilitating teen leadership and junior staff/counselor programs at both residential and day camps, and tutoring (both privately and for outside organizations). As a thirteen (13)-year veteran teaching in New Haven and Baltimore and as a father of four children, I know very little else than a life in which the happiness, success, and development of children is not at the forefront of everything I do.
As a member of your staff, I believe I can help youth/students set and reach goals and succeed in school. I believe this occurs through the building of positive relationships, creating and/or implementing engaging lesson plans that stress progress and effort as well as achievement, communicating with parents and making kids feel connected to adults in the greater community, and doing all of the above with energy, commitment, and passion.
In closing, I’ve always lived by a favorite quote from the Story People which reads, “Let it be said that we taught them to stand tall, even in the face of history, and that the world was made better, one child at a time.” I hope to bring this philosophy to your organization.

EMPLOYMENT/ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
James Hillhouse High School English Dept (New Haven, CT) 2006-Present Teacher (2006-present)
In my time at James Hillhouse High School, I have primarily taught English-2 (sophomore English), focusing formerly on CAPT preparation, and now on building and implementing units around the Common Core, the old and new SAT, and best practices in general. In English-2, I have taught units in rhetoric/argument, social injustice, dystopian and science-fiction literature, humanity’s relationship with technology and nature, the history of blacks’ representations in literary genres, public speaking, cultural diffusion, novel analysis, and analysis and writing of poetry and Hip Hop. I have also taught English electives including Creative Writing, Leadership through Literature, Sports, Politics, and Culture, and African Genesis and Diaspora, the latter three being courses I have created or revised into original courses. As part of my lessons, I’ve formed and implemented in-class, field trip, and extracurricular partnerships with Yale Repertory Theater, Long Wharf Theater’s Educator Workshops and “Moment and Minutes” Festival, Yale Peabody Museum, the New Haven Museum, and the Henry C. Lee Forensics Center at the University of New Haven.

In 2013, I taught the Gateway 043 course to high school seniors, focusing on non-fiction analysis and response and grammar instruction, the latter of which I also heavily focus on in my classroom. In the summer of 2017, I will reprise my teaching of a modified African Genesis course as well as develop a new curriculum for the Sports, Politics, and Culture elective. As a teacher I have also held leadership positions or been a part of committees in the areas detailed below.

Elective Courses Created: Leadership through Literature (2007-2008), African Genesis and Diaspora (2011, 2017-present), Sports, Politics, and Culture (2017-2018)
