Experience: I have three decades of science, design, education and business behind me. Teaching and learning are my true vocation.
For thirteen years I was Department Director for Natural Sciences at a small private regionally accredited college in Portland, Oregon. I designed and taught many courses in the biological sciences.
Prior to that I taught Introduction to Biology and Introduction to Microbiology at two research universities.
I co-developed and taught a course entitled "The World According to Microbes," designed for non-science students. As an outcome of that teaching experience, in 2001 I co-authored a publication entitled âLearning Microbiology Through Cooperation: Designing Cooperative Learning Activities that Promote Interdependence, Interaction, and Accountability.â Microbiology Education 3.1 (2002): 26â36.
I have presented many times on topics related to teaching science and biology:
Three examples:
* Small Group Learning in the Biological Sciences: Group-to-Individual Transfer of Subject Content & Meaningful Learning,
* âInvigorating a sense of student ownership of their learning through selfâdevelopment of an Individualized Strategic Plan for Academic Success.â
* Biology Youth Research Program: Developing Mentors for PreCollege Learning Experiences
I have been on two oceanographic research cruises as well as several lengthy explorations into the desert southwest.
I know that biology (and science in general) can be challenging to learn. By now I have taught hundreds of students and I am very good at talking things through with individuals so that the concepts are clear and well-learned.
