Information about Robert
Robert Teaching Philosophy
Bob brings a fresh new and exciting approach to learning math, one that students can
âCOUNT ONâ! He develops a strong rapport with each student and assists each one in making math meaningful and manageable. He "demystifies" math & algebra by relating it to what students already know and are interested in. Bob revitalized the entire math program at the Art Institute of Washington, where he has taught for the past 15 years. Bob taps into to his 45 years of experience in teaching, training, and mentoring in the US Army, management in the Information Technology Business and leadership in academia to customize the learning process for each student. He ensures that every student remains involved and invested in their own learning quest and receive their own edification in a student-centered vibrant learning environment. By leveraging the studentâs strengths while shoring up their weaknesses, he builds their confidence while they are learning new material. His specialties include FLIPPING the Classroom, getting students âPHYSCHED UPâ over math, overcoming math anxiety and test phobias, preparation for SAT/ACT/ASVAB and other standardized tests, a realistic approach to problem solving, and relating math to practical applications in business, art, trades and the sciences. Rather than try to educate the student, he empowers, encourages and entices them to learn, making each math class a real PEARL, based on the following five formulas:
1. Participation= Student Interactions & Presentations + Knowledge Building Teams
2. Exciting Class = INSTRUCTOR Energy + Enthusiasm + Student Engagement
3. Applied Mathematic = Street Smart Beats Book Smart & Relates MATH to REAL Life
4. Retention = Student Dialogue & Presentations and Testing with Feedback
5. Learning = Encourage Questions+ Present Challenges + Promote Experimentation
His major accomplishments include Tutor Findâs Tutor of The Year for Veterans, 2009; Art Institute of Washington Faculty of the Year 2007; as Director of Freshman Calculus 1984-1987 revising the Freshman Calculus Course as the United States Military Academy, as Program Manager Design and Implementation of the National Training Center for the US Army. Bobâs teaching philosophy is:
âItâs NOT a math class, itâs an ADVENTURE!â
