Information about Miriam

I see my role as the teacher, who helps students find the tools to help themselves, cheers them on in their successes, and supports them as they get back on their feet after setbacks.

My self reflections accumulate into a “work-in-progress” teaching philosophy that I tailor with each student, as everyone`s needs are different. Every day, I teach my students a certain subject matter, but most importantly, I help them learn what cannot be found in a book: how to read and understand directions, how to answer their own questions and listen to those of others and lastly, how to grasp that success in anything does not come without personal responsibility. Students today have access to all kinds of technology at home I believe in the importance of using this technology in my teaching to inspire, engage and hold their attention. For students to become academically successful and self confident, they must have the support of those around them. Because some students do not have much support, I make it my priority to empower them and remind them of the tools we have acquired together.

Experience: My experience teaching is quite eclectic. I have traveled to Africa and Mexico to teach street children how to use cameras as a literacy tool and convey their feelings about life through photographs. As a special education teacher at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, I had been lucky to serve an ethnically, economically and culturally diverse student body in a variety of classroom settings. At Murrow, I taught a wide variety of classes: Literacy, Writing, Living Environment, Human Biology and U.S. History. Some were a small class of 12 students, other classes were larger and taught with another instructor. I have also taught at an enrichment center during the summers, improving the math, reading, writing and speaking skills of elementary school students from China and other countries around the world. Currently, I teach students with disabilities Math, Science, English and Social Studies at West Hempstead Middle School. During a separate period, I work individually with students on their personal organization, improving reading fluency and comprehension, and re-teaching math skills.
