Information about Nathan

I am currently a 4th year undergraduate student at UCLA.

Availability: I am very flexible with my availability and can work any time of the day on weekends or weekdays.

Willing to travel: 30 miles

Experience: I absolutely love to teach. I am incredibly happy when I get to share my knowledge of science with others who are driven to enrich their education.

During my third year at UCLA, I served as a Peer Learning Facilitator (PLF) for UCLA`s Academic Advancement Program (AAP), which provides academic services to students from low-income, first-generation, or underrepresented minority backgrounds. As a PLF, I lead tutoring sessions in human physiology twice a week with ~24 UCLA students. To prepare for each session, I create 5-10 page worksheets with several practice problems that test course material. When I develop test questions, I always consider how material will be tested on class exams and create question scenarios that require application of the material (rather than remote memorization). During sessions, I give my students a collaborative environment where they are encouraged to engage in critical thinking. I usually provide an in-depth review of all challenging or confusing concepts covered in class. When my students feel more comfortable with the material, we share our answers about the practice questions and discuss our ideas as a group. Before exams, I also hold extra sessions with worksheets that review all material that is scheduled to be tested.

In addition, I love to provide mentorship and guidance to my students. I am currently being considered for admission into medical school, and I have extensive experience gaining positions of leadership in clinical organizations at UCLA, preparing an application to medical school, and taking the MCAT exam. Often, I meet with my students individually to discuss their goals for the future and support them in achieving those goals.

I am proud to say that the feedback I have received from students and supervisors have been overwhelmingly positive. My supervisor, Michael Le, has advocated on my behalf saying:

"Nathan exhibits great organizational skills, consistently serves his students through accessibility after sessions and above all, mentors students both in career and personal development. It is not often that I have the opportunity to work with PLFs of this caliber. His attention to detail and professionalism will undoubtedly be useful going forward in his medical career." (Michael`s email: theballthrower@ucla.edu)

I teach because I am committed to the success of my students.
